Spotlight on Familiar Faces in our New School Performance Season!

For the Centre’s 15th anniversary, we’ve been thinking a lot about the idea of “homecoming” and how we could reflect this idea in our programming as we celebrate this exciting milestone.

In our 2012-2013 school performance season, we are pleased to welcome back three of our favourite youth-based theatre troupes including Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, Green Thumb Theatre, and The American Place Theatre’s Literature to Life® program.

Mermaid Theatre is an award-winning Canadian company that has received accolades for its colourful and lively stage adaptations of Eric Carle’s classic books. This year, we are proud to present Mermaid Theatre’s newest production A Brown Bear, A Moon and A Caterpillar: Treasured Stories by Eric Carle (JK-3) for two shows on Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 10:00 am and 12:30 pm.

Mermaid Theatre returns to the LAC with a brand new show on Tuesday, November 20, 2012!

The last time we hosted Green Thumb Theatre at our centre, the company was finding a unique way to speak to students about addiction and drug culture through the use of theatre, spoken word, and hip hop in their original play, Cranked.

Building on their reputation for intelligent and impactful issues-based theatre, Green Thumb Theatre returns this year with Out in the Open (Gr. 7-12), an honest look at homophobia, friendship, social pressure, and navigating the complicated truths of teenage relationships.

How do we deal with our own fears and issues when faced with a shift in what we thought we knew?

Armed with a realistic story, two dynamic actors, and a detailed study guide to help teachers develop a dialogue about homophobia and how to build safer schools, this important production would be an ideal fit for English, Drama, Diversity, and Health & Physical Education classes.

Having just visited us in the spring of 2012, The American Place Theatre’s Literature to Life® program is a relatively new addition to our school performance roster, but it is one that we could not imagine being without.

Focusing first and foremost on inspiring a love for reading with its verbatim adaptations of significant literary works, this New York-based company has a rich repertoire of plays written and directed by Wynn Handman, a protégé of Sanford Meisner, and a multiple Lifetime Achievement award winner for his contributions to the theatre.

See this powerful coming-of-age story live at the LAC on February & & 8, 2013!

Our pick for this year’s season is The Secret Life of Bees (Gr. 6-12), a New York Times bestseller by Sue Monk Kidd that is set during the Civil Rights movement. Surrounded by a pre- and post-show interactive discussion led by an experienced educator, our presentation of this critically-acclaimed production on February 7 & 8, 2013 is sure to spark your students’ imaginations and kick start some engaging critical discussions just in time for Black History Month.

Tickets for all of our school performances are now on sale and more info can be found online at: http://www.livingartscentre.ca/index.php/shows/school-performance.html

We hope to see you and your students for our 2012-2013 school performance season!

Concert salutes the troops

A musical remembrance. The Windjammers, led by retired Lieutenant-Colonel Harry Currie, will perform on Friday at the Living Arts Centre as part of the Celebrate and Remember with the Stars Who Went to War concert.

Remembrance Day is coming early to the Living Arts Centre.
Celebrate and Remember with the Stars Who Went to War, a concert that honours members of the military serving in Afghanistan in addition to some of the most famous men and women to ever wear the uniform, will be performed this Friday.
The concert features tributes to celebrities such as Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart and Elvis Presley, each of whom gave up a promising career to serve their country.
The show features the 38-member Windjammers ensemble, led by retired Lieutenant-Colonel Harry Currie, the group’s artistic director and conductor. They’ll be joined by Toronto’s Northern Lights Barbershop Chorus.
A tribute to Canadian, American and British soldiers serving in Afghanistan is planned.
“People have given up their lives so we can live safely, and that’s something we have to remember,” said Currie. “We must keep remembering their sacrifice.”
Lieutenant-colonels Scott Attridge and Bobby Herriot will serve as guest conductors. The evening is hosted by Canadian actor Ted Follows.
In addition to the stars, other notable people will be featured, including Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John A. MacDonald.
There’s also a segment on the film, Midway, as well as music from television shows Hogan’s Heroes and Dad’s Army, a British sitcom.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the Military Families Fund, which provides emergency funds to families and spouses of Canadian soldiers serving abroad. Funds are available for rehabilitation, education and financial assistance.
“When families are in trouble because of the death of a (loved one), the fund can be used to help them out,” said Currie. “It’s money that’s available to them without all the rigmarole and red tape.”
Show time is 7 p.m. Tickets cost $10 to $30. Call 905-306-6000.

Fiddle whiz stops at LAC

Fiddle champ. Natalie MacMaster comes to the Living Arts Centre on November 14, 2010.

The sounds of the fiddle can be heard at the Living Arts Centre on Nov. 14 when Natalie MacMaster returns to town.
The Nova Scotia musician, who was last here in 2006 for a Christmas concert, is sure to spin a few yarns and tunes from Cape Breton Island.
That’s because she’s set to release her first book, Cape Breton Aire, on Thursday. The 161-page hardcover book takes readers on a musical history lesson of the island, including its landscape and people.
She also released the DVD, Natalie MacMaster: Live in Cape Breton, which was recorded in 2006 at the Celtic Colours International Festival.
There’s also a good chance she’ll perform selections from her most recent album, 2006′s Yours Truly. It features the track, Farewell To Peter, which honours the late newscaster Peter Jennings.
MacMaster has released 11 recordings in her career, with 1993′s Fit as a Fiddle, 1997′s No Boundaries and 1999′s In My Hands reaching gold sales certification in Canada.
MacMaster’s 2000 album, My Roots Are Showing, was nominated for a Grammy Award. Yo-Yo Ma & Friends: Songs Of Joy And Peace, which featured a track by MacMaster, won a Grammy Award in the Best Classical Crossover Album category earlier this year.
In 2005, Blueprint garnered MacMaster Best Female Artist of the Year and Best Roots/Traditional Solo Recording at the East Coast Music Awards.
